coffee grounds for eye bags – DIY under-eye mask (de-puff & brighten)

Using coffee grounds for eye bags can temporarily de-puff and brighten the under-eye area by constricting surface vessels and reducing fluid buildup.

Below are 7 quick coffee eye mask recipes, plus how to apply coffee under eyes, how long to leave it, and safe-use tips for delicate skin.

New here? Start with my how to reduce puffy eyes guide.

Coffee for under eyes: quick tips

Use these to make any coffee under eyes mask gentler and more effective.

    • Chill the mix 10 minutes before applying to boost de-puffing.
    • Use very fine grounds; avoid coarse particles near the eye.
    • If using instant/dehydrated coffee, add a few drops of water first to make a paste, then chill.
    • Stay 3–4 mm below the lash line; keep product out of the eye.
    • Start 2–3×/week; always patch test on the jawline first.

Coffee eye mask recipes (7 options)

    1) Basic caffeine de-puff (fast)

    Bowl of ground coffee.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tbsp very-fine coffee grounds
    • ½ tsp water (or jojoba oil)

Use: Mix → chill 10 min → apply 10–15 min → wipe, then rinse.

Tip: I find that chilling mixture first helps boosts de-puffing

    2. Coffee and honey under eyes (hydration)

Tablespoon of honey near coffee beans.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tbsp grounds
    • 1 tsp honey
    • 1–2 drops water to blend

    Use: Mix → chill → apply 10–15 min → wipe/rinse.

    Benefit: Honey helps add moisture.

    3. Yogurt brighten (gentle lactic)

A tablespoon of yogurt on top of coffee beans.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tbsp grounds
    • 2 tsp plain yogurt

    Use: Mix → chill → apply 10–15 min → wipe/rinse.

Benefits: Yogurt’s lactic acid helps exfoliate and polish.

    4. Egg-white firming (optional)

Whisked eye whites for eye mask.

    Ingredients:

    • 3 tbsp grounds
    • 1 egg white (whisked)

    Use: Mix → apply 10 min → wipe/rinse.

Tip: Discard leftovers. Avoid if allergic to eggs.

    5. Aloe cool-calm

Aloe vera gel on a spoon.

      Ingredients:

    • 1 tbsp grounds
    • 1 tbsp aloe gel

    Use: Mix → chill → apply 10–15 min → wipe/rinse.

    Benefits: Soothes and hydrates.

    6. Vitamin E nourish

    Vitamin E soft gels.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tbsp grounds
    • 2–3 drops vitamin E oil (or 1 softgel)

    Use: Mix → chill briefly → apply 10–15 min → wipe/rinse.

    7. Milk micro polish and brighten

A tablespoon of milk over a bowl of coffee grounds.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tbsp grounds
    • 1 tbsp whole milk

    Use: Mix → chill → apply 10–15 min → wipe/rinse.

Benefits/Tip: Use real cow’s milk because it naturally contains lactic acid due to lactose fermentation. Lactic acid = gentle brighten.

Switching to a full-face polish? Try my turmeric face scrub recipe (not for under-eyes)

How to apply coffee under eyes (step-by-step)

How to apply tips for best results:

    1. Mix to a soft paste; chill 10 minutes.
    2. On clean skin, dab under the eye—stay 3–4 mm below the lash line.
    3. Leave 10–15 minutes; wipe off with a damp cotton pad, then rinse.
    4. Follow with eye serum and SPF in daytime.

How long to leave coffee under eyes

How long to leave under the eyes and how often should you use it?

Keep masks on 10–15 minutes. Longer isn’t better overdoing it can irritate thin under-eye skin.

    Use about 2–3×/week max.

Is coffee good for eye bags? (what to expect)

Short answer: Using coffee for eye bags and coffee for dark circles can offer temporary improvement (de-puffing, mild brightening).

Results vary and depend on sleep, salt, allergies, and hydration—so think of this as a quick pick-me-up, not a permanent fix.

    Coffee under eyes overnight?

No, it’s best to skip it. Overnight use raises irritation risk. Stick to 10–15 minutes, then rinse.

    Tools & supplies

Here are some things you’ll need before starting:

    • very-fine coffee grounds (powdered or cooled grounds)
    • honey/yogurt/aloe/milk (choose one)
    • vitamin E (optional)
    • whisk/spoon
    • small bowl
    • cotton pads
    • dark towel

    My personal take

As someone who battles puffiness, I’ve had good result with chilled coffee eye masks—smoother, less puffy in minutes. I use a dark washcloth and rinse surfaces right away (coffee can stain).
